Saturday Art School

Supported by The Pennsylvania State University

Saturday Art School is a  program designed for pre-service student teachers at Pennsylvania State University, providing an environment to gain experience with different teaching styles within the field.  Children come from Center County, Pennsylvania and enter the 8 week program with an array of talents and interests.  Teachers design a curriculum and individual weekly lessons to implement with the students, mirroring the customary school system.  Teachers become learners in this exercise, in that they obtain a greater understanding of their own skills as well as the challenges and rewards that come with classroom instruction.

COLLABORATIVE CLASS FLAG

Students created individual works of art on canvas with fabric paint and markers, keeping in mind the elements of pattern as well as the use of contrasting and complementary colors. They worked collaboratively to sew the pieces together using plastic needles and yarn.

ALUMINUM FOIL CREATURES

Under the streets of New York City live mutant creatures made to thrive in this unique sewer environment. Students were challenged to take non-traditional art materials to make a creature that possesed the characteristics that an animal would need to survive in this unique habitat.

PRINTMAKING

With the use of a new and challenging technique, students carved into EZ-cut blocks to experiment with the properties of printmaking.  New and exciting materials and techniques were introduced to this group with safey demonstrations and student assessments prior to distribution of tools.
